Dear Readers,
I am pleased to share this special edition of the Research Roundup 2025 Year in Review, highlighting some of the most impactful research achievements from across the University of Maryland this past year.
We have much to celebrate from 2025. The university received the Innovation and Economic Prosperity Innovation Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and was named a top-10 university for entrepreneurship for the 11th consecutive year. We launched the Capital of Quantum initiative—an unprecedented public-private partnership with the state of Maryland—and opened the Edward & Jennifer St. John Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine, a milestone collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dozens of UMD faculty were recognized among the world’s most highly cited scholars, and our researchers submitted a record number of funding proposals despite a tremendously challenging year. But the strength of a research enterprise is measured by far more than awards and accolades. The Research Roundup strives to showcase the bold, innovative and creative work happening every day across our campus, in every discipline. I invite you to look back with me at some of the stories that made this year so memorable. I hope they inspire the same pride and gratitude that I feel in leading a world-class research program committed to addressing the world’s grand challenges.
Thank you for everything you do to advance research at the University of Maryland. I look forward to building on our momentum in the year ahead.
Wishing you a restful holiday season and a prosperous 2026.
