"America is not like a blanket — one piece of unbroken cloth, the same color, the same texture, the same size. America is more like a quilt: many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven and held together by a common thread."
― Civil Rights Leader Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson

In the last few weeks, I have been reflecting on the life of Civil Rights leader Jesse Jackson. I had the opportunity to watch his Celebration of Life, where many leaders gathered to honor his legacy and speak about the profound impact of his work. One of the speakers was his son, Jonathan Jackson, who shared stories about the courage of Rev. Jackson—how, even in the face of danger, he remained determined to stand for others, especially those whose voices were often unheard. Rev. Jackson preached about justice reform movements, his teachings and activism reflected values of redemption, reconciliation, and repair within community.

During Spring Break, thirty faculty and staff will participate in a Restorative Justice program on campus in collaboration with the University of San Diego. This diverse group of participants is committed to reigniting a program that will create spaces for dialogue, active accountability, and healing within our community.
I am proud of the work we are doing to bring this initiative back to life. In many ways, it reflects the spirit of Rev. Jackson’s legacy: the belief that justice is not only about addressing harm, but also about restoring relationships, strengthening community, and ensuring that every voice matters. By investing in restorative practices, we are choosing to build a campus culture grounded in responsibility, compassion, and the possibility of repair.
We know that you will join us as we champion this work in our community.
En Communidad,
Dina Zavala

Indigenous Student Research
|
|
Opportunities for college students to learn directly with Indigenous research mentors are rare, especially when project timing is restricted to school breaks. With funding from a Mellon Foundation Humanities for All Times grant, Carleton’s Indigenous Engagement in Place Initiative supports research collaborations reflecting priorities of Indigenous community partners. Students work with faculty and staff to prioritize ethical and reciprocal engagement with Indigenous community partners, including sovereignty, cultural protocols, and appropriate protection of project data.

The Indigenous Engagement in Place stories will soon feature blog posts on projects and experiences from three SRFs selected for winter break 2025: Lydia Olson ’26, Gerado Vega Diaz ’28, and Nina Wakabayahi ’28. Applications for the Summer 2026 Student Research Fellowship for Indigenous Engagement are open now, apply by March 16!

We are so excited to send ten students under the guidance of Professor Fernando Contreras Flamand and Professor Xavier Tavera to study themes of migration and community life along the U.S.–Mexico border. Thank you to all who applied and made the application process so robust! We cannot wait to hear about all this group will explore, and see the innovative ways they apply their learning when they return. This opportunity would not be possible without the generous support of the Office of the President and the Latin American Studies Program.

The IDE activities described in the 2025 end-of-year Department and Program reports offer a panoply of creative ways departments are engaging in important IDE work. From helping students take ownership of their own discipline-based affinity groups to featuring the work of professionals of color in comps, from teaching how to hold difficult conversations to advancing a respectful non-gendered adaptation of a gendered language, from studying the pathways of underrepresented students through a major to working with community partners on IDE activities – there are as many successful ways to support IDE work as there are departments and programs. On May 19, the LTC and CEDI will co-sponsor a presentation by faculty from French, Computer Science, Mathematics/Statistics, Neuroscience, and Middle Eastern Languages featuring some highlights of these activities. We hope you join us! Do you have an idea about how to make our community more inclusive or equitable? Reach out to co-chair Deanna Haunsperger.

As part of The Carleton 2033 Strategic Direction, our division is developing the First at Carleton Program, an initiative designed to expand support for all first-generation and immigrant-origin students. We are conducting a comprehensive environmental scan to better understand how first-generation students are currently supported across campus. This process includes reviewing existing data and prior reports, gathering feedback from campus stakeholders, and conducting focus groups with first-gen students. The initiative is being developed in collaboration with TRIO and the 1GEN student organization, with the support of the 1st Gen Students Steering Committee.
Did you know about Carleton’s first-generation faculty and staff directory? If you are a first-generation staff or faculty member, you can choose to be listed there!
