Hit by Tariffs, U.S. Furniture-maker MillerKnoll Swings to Net Loss in Fiscal 2025
|
|
MillerKnoll reported a net loss of $36.9 million for fiscal year 2025, primarily due to the impact of tariffs and an unusually high effective tax rate. Despite experiencing higher sales and order growth, the company faced significant challenges following the reimposition of tariffs, which interrupted a trend of positive order growth. In the fourth quarter alone, MillerKnoll incurred a net loss of $57.1 million compared to a profit from the previous year.
The firm has announced plans to offset tariff impacts through pricing strategies, including a 4.5 percent list price increase. While the company anticipates continued challenges from tariffs, it remains optimistic about future sales and earnings, limiting its guidance to the first quarter due to the uncertain macroeconomic environment. MillerKnoll is also focusing on expanding its retail presence, having opened new stores and a flagship location in Chicago, as part of its ongoing retail strategy.
MillerKnoll reported strong Q2 results for CY2025, exceeding Wall Street's revenue expectations with sales rising 8.2% year-on-year to $961.8 million. The company's guidance for the next quarter was also favorable, forecasting revenue of $919 million, surpassing analyst predictions. Their non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.60 outperformed the consensus estimate by 37.4%. Key highlights include a decrease in operating margin to 5.7%, a backlog of $761.3 million, and a market capitalization of $1.2 billion.
Fourth Quarter
- Net sales of $961.8 million, up 8.2% as reported and up 7.8% organically, year-over-year
- Orders of $1,036.8 million, up 11.1% as reported and up 10.7% organically, year-over-year
- Gross margin decreased 40 basis points, primarily from approximately $7.0 million of tariff-related cost increases in the quarter, offset in part by the benefit of leverage on higher net sales
- Consolidated operating expenses decreased to $321.9 million
- Consolidated adjusted operating expenses increased to $305.0 million, driven primarily by higher variable incentive compensation costs and higher selling expense from the higher sales volume
- Special charges of $16.9 million:
- $10.6 million of restructuring charges, primarily related to workforce reductions
- $6.3 million of purchase accounting amortization
- Operating margin of 5.7%, compared to 2.7% in the prior year
- Adjusted operating margin of 7.5%, compared to 8.3% in the prior year
-
Fiscal 2025
- Net sales of $3.7 billion, up 1.1% as reported and up 1.6% organically, year-over-year
- Gross margin decreased 30 basis points
- Operating margin of 1.4%, compared to 4.6% in the prior year
- Adjusted operating margin of 6.8%, compared to 7.2% in the prior year

Steelcase sees strong Q1 revenue, income gains on corporate demand
Steelcase reported a strong start to fiscal year 2026, with first-quarter revenue increasing by 7% to $779 million, driven by growth in the Americas and investments from large corporate clients. Net income rose to $13.6 million, up from $10.9 million in the same period last year. The company's adjusted earnings per share reached 20 cents, compared to 16 cents in Q1 2025.
Revenue in the Americas grew by 9%, reaching $603.6 million, although order volume in the region declined by 1%. International revenue increased by 1% to $175.4 million, supported by strong performance in India, the U.K., and China. Gross margin improved to 33.9%, with operating income climbing 45% to $25.5 million.
Steelcase initiated restructuring actions in the Americas targeting $20 million in annualized savings, which included headcount reductions. The company's backlog at the end of the quarter was approximately $801 million, and it anticipates second-quarter revenue between $860 million and $890 million. A quarterly dividend of 10 cents per share has been declared, with liquidity standing at $391.5 million and total debt at $447.3 million.
After the release, Steelcase shares dropped 8.5% due to a weak international outlook and soft order patterns, with a 1% decline in organic Americas orders.
Looking ahead, Steelcase anticipates continued growth from large organizations, supported by new product launches designed for hybrid work environments. Future performance is expected to depend on sustained corporate demand, effective cost management, and the effects of shifting public funding policies.

Office Tenants Shift Focus from Downsizing to Strategic Growth
|
|
Recent trends indicate that many office tenants are shifting their focus from downsizing to strategic growth, with one in eight global occupiers planning to expand their office space due to reaching or nearing capacity. After a period of restraint during the pandemic, decreasing interest rates are slowly reviving interest in real estate. However, uncertainties related to political policies are still impacting market dynamics.
Companies have been hesitant to invest in real estate unless necessary, but as return-to-office strategies and occupancy rates increase, a tipping point is expected in the next six to eighteen months. While cost remains a primary factor in corporate real estate decisions, many firms are also considering employee-centric factors.
The era of significant downsizing is reportedly coming to an end, with only a third of companies planning to reduce their space further. Office utilization rates are stabilizing, although they remain below pre-pandemic levels. Tenants are looking for enhanced amenities and are willing to pay more for improved workplace experiences. However, there is a gap between employee expectations and their current work environments, particularly regarding collaboration and culture.
Real estate decisions are increasingly viewed through the lens of employee needs, emphasizing the importance of workplace performance, talent retention, and organizational culture.

AI Tenants Fuel Bay Area's Office Market Rebound
|
|
A surge in demand from artificial intelligence firms is revitalizing the Bay Area's office market, leading to increased leasing activity and decreased vacancy rates. Recent data indicates the sharpest quarterly drop in vacancy since 2015, with rates falling to 35.1% due to rising net absorption and significant leasing deals. AI companies accounted for over 800,000 square feet of leases in the first two quarters of the year, contributing to a net absorption of 610,000 square feet in Q2, marking the strongest quarterly total since 2018.
Major AI firms like OpenAI and Sierra have expanded their office spaces significantly, while Databricks secured a new headquarters. Additionally, there are 39 AI-related companies seeking 1.4 million square feet, with expectations for further growth. Overall leasing activity for Q2 reached 2.3 million square feet, positioning 2025 to be the best year for office leasing since 2019. Other notable non-AI deals also supported the market, with availability decreasing as tenants secured new leases and demand remained high.

How Hybrid Work is Reshaping Office Space Strategy for Enterprises
The shift towards hybrid work models has led enterprises to rethink their office space strategies significantly. Companies are moving away from traditional fixed office layouts to more flexible designs that include collaboration spaces, focus zones, and social areas. This transformation is prompting many to downsize their real estate footprints and consolidate into strategically located hubs, allowing for better resource allocation towards digital infrastructure and employee wellbeing initiatives.
Key considerations in this new office environment include selecting ergonomic and adaptable furniture, creating wellness-focused spaces, and integrating technology to support seamless collaboration. The role of the office is evolving, becoming a venue for mentorship, social interaction, and a representation of company culture rather than just a workspace. As hybrid work becomes a permanent fixture, organizations must align their office designs with operational goals and employee needs to foster productivity and engagement.

How to create a workplace where changemakers thrive
|
|
To foster innovation, organizations must create environments where diverse changemakers can thrive together rather than relying on individual disruptors. Catalysts, who challenge the status quo and drive transformation, often struggle in traditional structures that prioritize predictability. To support these individuals, organizations should identify and integrate them into cross-functional teams, provide protective measures to prevent burnout, and amplify their contributions across the organization. By designing systems that value exploration and collaboration, organizations can enhance their capacity for sustainable change and innovation.
