EI OR DEI?
Georgia's Voter ID Law Is
on the Line This Election

DEI vs
Most of what we argue about in elections comes down to two different definitions of the word fair, and they lead to very different places.

EI — Election Integrity. Easy to vote and hard to cheat. One set of rules, everyone meets them, and anybody can check the result.
DEI — applied to elections. A rule is unfair if groups clear it at different rates. Measure the gap, then remove whatever is causing it.

Take the simplest rule we have: requiring an ID to vote. The Democrats made the DEI argument against it here in 2021 and lost. They are making the same argument in California right now, and there they are winning. If they take control of Georgia's elections, we lose what we have gained and start moving in California's direction.

The Democrats' DEI Argument Against Voter ID LOST in Georgia in 2021

When Georgia passed SB 202 in 2021, President Biden called it Jim Crow 2.0, and Major League Baseball moved the All-Star Game out of Atlanta. Keisha Lance Bottoms, now the Democratic candidate for governor, was Atlanta's mayor. She said:

The voting restrictions "will disproportionately impact Atlanta residents," particularly "communities of color and other minority groups."

That is DEI applied to a ballot. The claim is not that anyone will be barred from voting. It is that a rule everyone must meet will stop one group more than another — which only holds if that group is less able to meet it.

Georgians continued voting in large numbers after SB 202, and more Black Georgians cast ballots after the law than before it. The law has also never lost in court. Every challenge brought against it has failed, which means no judge has found it discriminatory or unlawful.

Predictions of a collapse in minority voter participation did not materialize.

That Same DEI Argument Against Voter ID Is WINNING in California in 2026

Voters in Huntington Beach, California approved a measure allowing their city to require ID in municipal elections. California then passed a law prohibiting cities from imposing their own voter ID requirements. The city's voters had approved the measure, but their city could not put it into effect. Read the state's announcement of the ruling.

California No-ID Emblem
The measure "disproportionately burdens low-income voters, voters of color, young or elderly voters, and people with disabilities."

Bottoms made that argument in Georgia and lost. California Democrats made it and won. Today, California law prohibits cities from requiring voter ID in their elections—even when the cities' own voters approve it.

If Bottoms and the Democrats take over Georgia's elections, we start moving toward California.

The Bottom Line
Please Stand With EI Over DEI

Georgia's next governor and secretary of state will decide whether to keep and strengthen the rules we have now or take them apart.

Republicans Rick Jackson for governor and Tim Fleming for secretary of state stand with EI — keep the ID requirement and the roll maintenance behind it. Democrats Keisha Lance Bottoms and Penny Brown Reynolds stand with DEI — Bottoms argued against Georgia’s law as mayor of Atlanta, and she is endorsed by Fair Fight, the organization Stacey Abrams founded, which fought SB 202.
