Hello COAD Outreach Partners -

COAD's AFN & Older Adults Subcommittee continues this year's information campaign for emergency preparedness. As our partners, we encourage you to share this information with as many clients and partners as you can so that more people know about the resources available in our community before a disaster happens. The first steps in a response for vulnerable individuals, such as older adults and those with access and functional needs, is preparedness. Together we can build a more resilient Napa County!

This week's topic is: EVACUATION & TRANSPORTATION PLAN

We provide OUTREACH QUESTIONS as conversation starters for this week's topic, and in the following section we provide the RESOURCES to answer those questions. Flyers, in both pdf and jpeg formats, and links are provided for easy sharing. You may use the jpeg images for online sharing, and the pdf versions for sharing hard copies and via email. Feel free to share this information with your distribution list of partners and/or include this information in any newsletters you may send out to the greater community.

If you are sharing these flyers on Facebook, please copy and paste this blurb as the caption and tag us (@Napa Valley COAD). You can share this campaign directly on Facebook by clicking the button below:

English: "Napa Valley COAD continues this spring's information campaign! Our topic this week in preparedness is EVACUATION & TRANSPORTATION PLANNING. According to the NOAA results (Napa County Older Adults Assessment), about 18% of older adults who responded to the survey don't drive in Napa County. This percentage spikes to 50% for latino older adults, who prefer to get rides from friends and family to get around. Napa County has already experienced mass evacuations during the 2020 wildfires, and it's critical that we connect with our most vulnerable, like older adults and individuals with access and functional needs, to have an evacuation and transportation plan. A transportation plan should be 4-deep in case someone is unable to help during emergencies. Evacuation planning makes the community safer during times of disaster. Some may need to evacuate during a warning, instead of waiting for the evacuation order, because it takes longer for some to leave. Always evacuate if you don't feel safe. Take a look at these resources and please share them so more people can be informed. Thank you!"

¡Gracias!"

NV COAD's MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR PROGRAM

Meet Your Neighbor is a workshop to build self-reliance and community resilience through neighborhood connection. Pulling resources together such as the skills and equipment the neighborhood shares can help in any emergency. Many older adults that don't drive relied on neighbors, family, and friends to evacuate during the 2020 wildfires. Getting connected to neighbors before an emergency can help older adults and individuals with access and functional needs build their network for a transportation plan during emergencies. Transportation plans should be multiple levels deep. This means you should have multiple backup plans in the case that you are unable to reach your first few contacts, or they are unable to give you a ride during an evacuation. Make sure you are able to safely transport any pets – they must be in a hard-cased carrier or kennel in order to be received in the evacuation center.

    PET PREPAREDNESS

Many older adults don't live with any direct family members, and instead look to pets for companionship. These pets become important members of the family that also need supplies in case of evacuations. Be sure to include any pets in your evacuation planning and that you're able to transport them to safety as well. Pack a go bag for your pets and have a hard case carrier for easy and safe evacuations.

Napa CART has a Senior Evacuation Toolkit for their companion animals, and more resources on how to evacuate larger animals.

Jameson Humane has some great resources on how to prepare your pets for emergencies and also does pet food distributions at certain locations.

    GENASYS PROTECT / ZONEHAVEN
Genasys Protect, formerly known as Zonehaven, is a tool for people to know their evacuation zones prior to an emergency. Input your address to the interactive online map to find your zone. Alerts sent through text and Alert Napa County will refer to these evacuation zones during an emergency.

    Thank You!

Thank you for sharing these critical resources and being a part of this information campaign. COAD appreciates your partnership!
