Hello COAD Outreach Partners -

COAD's AFN & Older Adults Subcommittee continues this year's information campaign for emergency preparedness. As our partners, we encourage you to share this information with as many clients and partners as you can so that more people know about the resources available in our community before a disaster happens. The first steps in a response for vulnerable individuals, such as older adults and those with access and functional needs, is preparedness. Together we can build a more resilient Napa County!

This week's topic is: PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR SAFETY

We provide OUTREACH QUESTIONS as conversation starters for this week's topic, and in the following section we provide the RESOURCES to answer those questions. Flyers, in both pdf and jpeg formats, and links are provided for easy sharing. You may use the jpeg images for online sharing, and the pdf versions for sharing hard copies and via email. Feel free to share this information with your distribution list of partners and/or include this information in any newsletters you may send out to the greater community.

If you are sharing these flyers on Facebook, please copy and paste this blurb as the caption and tag us (@Napa Valley COAD):

English: "Napa Valley COAD continues this spring's information campaign! Our third topic of preparedness is PREPARING YOUR HOME. Older adults and individuals with mobility issues need to make sure they can safely exit their home quickly when there is an evacuation or other emergency. Don't hang objects above your bed in case of an earthquake in the middle of the night, and be sure that your furniture doesn't block any exits. Take a look at these resources and please share them so more people can be informed. Thank you!"

¡Gracias!"

OUTREACH QUESTIONS

  • Would you be able to evacuate your home in a safe and efficient manner in the case of an emergency?
  • Is there any furniture or piles of belongings blocking your closest exits?
  • Are you familiar with what is needed to prepare the outside of your home for a disaster, such as ensuring defensible space and fire protection practices?

RESOURCES

HAVE A HAZARD REDUCTION PLAN

It's important to make sure your home is safe both inside and outside. Below we have more resources on home hardening and defensible space for preparing your home on the outside. For older adults and individuals with mobility issues, it is critical that the inside of the home has clear pathways to the exits and doesn't have furniture blocking any windows or doorways. This type of hazard reduction, allows for quick and safe evacuations during emergencies. More tips can be found in an emergency preparedness presentation by the Independent Living Resources of Solano and Contra Costa County.

A flyer in both pdf and jpeg format going over some tips around hazard reduction inside the home can also be found below.
