In a recent study published in Science Advances, a multidisciplinary team led by Drs. Francesca Barbero, Tomas Lenc and Sylvie Nozaradan, from the Rhythm and Brains Lab (IONS), reveals that our brains don’t simply track the temporal structure of rhythmic patterns—they categorize them. Using EEG, researchers recorded neural activity of participants listening to rhythms with varying temporal structures. Instead of faithfully tracking those rhythms, the brain automatically associate them to distinct categories—even without any explicit movement or timing tasks. This neural categorization of rhythm closely match how people later show to move to the rhythms, suggesting that rhythm processing is implicit, and built into our biology. This discovery sheds light on the roots of rhythm perception, and on how humans, across cultures, make sense of the endless world of rhythm. Read the full article.
