By the Numbers
The Supreme Court ruling invalidated President Trump’s illegal emergency tariffs, marking the end of one volatile chapter in U.S. trade policy and the beginning of another. The Court determined that Trump had exceeded his statutory authority in imposing the tariffs under emergency powers, effectively dismantling a framework that had reshaped global sourcing decisions for years. However, Trump quickly signaled he would pursue a new 10 percent tariff under a different legal theory, later increasing that proposed rate to 15 percent. The shift underscores that while one legal pathway has been blocked, the broader tariff strategy remains intact in spirit, if not in structure.
The ruling raises complex questions about the more than $134 billion collected under the invalidated tariffs, including whether importers will receive refunds and how such repayments would be administered. That process alone could trigger prolonged litigation and bureaucratic delays. Meanwhile, the introduction of a new tariff regime—however repackaged—reintroduces short-term pricing volatility into supply chains that had only recently begun stabilizing. Businesses must now model multiple regulatory scenarios at once: potential refunds, retroactive adjustments, and the risk of yet another judicial reversal.
For the contract furnishings industry, which depends heavily on globally sourced components ranging from steel mechanisms to textiles and finished goods, the immediate takeaway is not clarity but renewed opacity. Pricing strategies, dealer margins, and long-term project bids are once again subject to policy risk. Layer onto that the ongoing political noise surrounding the Trump–Epstein files, which continues to dominate headlines and distract policymakers, and the result is less transparency and more confusion ahead. Instead of coherent trade guidance, manufacturers and dealers are navigating a fragmented information environment where legal disputes, election-year rhetoric, and reputational controversies compete for attention.
Politically, the implications are substantial as congressional elections approach. Public opinion polling has generally shown limited enthusiasm for broad-based tariff expansion, particularly when costs are perceived to be passed through to businesses and consumers. While the new tariff proposal could produce short-term fiscal inflows or signal economic nationalism to certain constituencies, it also invites further court challenges and potential refund disputes. In practical terms, de-escalation has not yet materialized; rather, the industry faces a recalibration phase marked by legal uncertainty, strategic repositioning, and heightened risk management across procurement and pricing decisions.

Haworth Acquires Heller, Expands Lifestyle Strategy with John Edelman Appointment
|
|
|
As the contract furniture industry continues to evaluate major consolidation moves—including HNI Corporation’s acquisition of Steelcase, HNI’s earlier purchase of Kimball International, and Herman Miller’s combination with Knoll—Haworth has made a more design-focused move.
Haworth announced last week that it has acquired Heller, the 1971-founded modern design brand known for its accessible indoor-outdoor furniture and collaborations with leading architects and designers. The company said the acquisition will preserve Heller’s retail distribution while leveraging Haworth’s global platform for growth.
“With our combined efforts and John’s creative vision, we can put Heller where it deserves to be,” said Franco Bianchi, President & CEO of Haworth. “We want lovers of Heller to know the brand is in good hands.”
John Edelman, who purchased Heller in 2022 following the death of founder Alan Heller in 2021, will remain involved as Creative Director. He has also been appointed President, North & South America, for Haworth Lifestyle, overseeing brands including Cassina, Poltrona Frau, and Zanotta in the Americas.
“The Heller brand is dramatically ahead of its business,” Edelman said. “Joining Haworth… will allow Heller to reach new heights.”
Edelman previously led Design Within Reach, which he acquired in 2010 and later sold to Herman Miller in 2014, expanding its retail footprint and trade business. His appointment signals Haworth’s continued investment in its lifestyle division, which also includes Luminaire, as the company broadens its reach beyond traditional contract channels.

Business conditions at architecture firms showed a decline at the start of 2026, with the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) dropping to 43.8. This indicates more firms experienced a decrease in billings compared to December 2025. Additionally, inquiries for new projects and the value of newly signed design contracts have also softened, reflecting client uncertainty about initiating new work.
Billings have decreased across most regions, except for the South where they remained flat. Firms in the Midwest, which had seen growth previously, are now experiencing declines again. Despite some stability in the multifamily residential sector, no billing growth has been noted since mid-2022.
The broader economy remains soft, with lower-than-expected employment gains reported for 2025. However, construction employment showed improvement, adding 33,000 jobs in January 2026. Small business optimism has declined, primarily due to reduced expectations for hiring and capital expenditures.
Many architecture firms are finding it increasingly challenging to negotiate project design fees, with 56% reporting difficulties compared to two years ago. The most commonly used fee determination methods include professional fees and stipulated sums. Profitability varies by client type and project delivery method, with corporate and government projects generally seen as more profitable than non-profit organizations. Notably, traditional design-bid-build contracts are ranked as quite profitable compared to other methods.

VMI's estimated assets are between $100,001 and $500,000, while liabilities range from $500,001 to $1 million. The company owes approximately 49 creditors, including the U.S. Small Business Administration and American Express, and plans to develop a reorganization plan in the coming months.

Wall Street is skeptical about the office market's recovery despite improvements in leasing and occupancy, primarily due to concerns that AI could reduce the need for office space. Office REIT stocks have declined significantly, contrasting with gains in other real estate sectors. Although leasing activity has increased, landlords are offering substantial concessions, raising doubts about future cash flow. Analysts express concerns about job growth and occupancy rates, suggesting a disconnect between employment increases and office demand, making the outlook for office REITs uncertain.

In the U.S. legal sector, office leasing reached record levels in 2025, with fourth-quarter signings totaling 4.3 million square feet, a 9% increase from the previous quarter, contributing to an annual total of 18.8 million square feet—up 3% from 2024. Major markets like New York City, Boston, Atlanta, and San Francisco led the activity, which represented 8% of total major market office leasing. A notable trend emerged in Q4, where renewals surpassed new leases for the first time since Q2 2024, due to a shortage of high-quality spaces. New leases accounted for 41% of the activity, while 62% of expansions increased space, contrasting with 17% of renewals. Overall, expansions made up 38% of leases, marking the highest share since 2020, while downsizing fell to 23%, the lowest level in the same period.

U.S. office real estate is stabilizing, with a 6.1% increase in average sale prices, primarily benefiting modern buildings in specific locations. While vacancy rates have improved nationally, tech-heavy cities like Seattle still struggle. Transaction volumes are rising in major urban centers, but construction remains low, focusing on high-quality projects. The future of work is leading to fewer, but better-quality office spaces, emphasizing location and adaptability over sheer size.

The conversation highlights the role of personal experience in valuing designed objects and the significance of authenticity in vintage pieces. They advocate for thorough research and hands-on experience to identify quality, encouraging buyers to appreciate the stories and heritage behind furniture. Additionally, they suggest that investing in high-quality items can lead to lasting memories and satisfaction, contrasting this with the impulse-buying culture prevalent today.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has expressed skepticism regarding the blame placed on artificial intelligence (AI) for job layoffs. While many companies have cited AI as a reason for significant job cuts—over 55,000 layoffs in 2025 attributed to AI—the employment data does not substantiate claims of mass job displacement. Altman suggests that some companies may be using AI as a scapegoat for layoffs they would have executed regardless. He acknowledges that AI will indeed disrupt various jobs over time, but emphasizes that the labor market has not yet seen significant unemployment due to AI. The conversation around AI's impact is ongoing, with concerns about its effects on entry-level jobs and the evolving nature of work in sectors like tech and finance.

Law firms are increasingly adopting open-plan offices to enhance collaboration and optimize space, as seen with Linklaters' move to a new headquarters featuring bookable desks. While some lawyers prefer traditional private offices, others are adjusting to hot-desking. The trend is driven by high operating costs and the need for flexibility, with firms like Addleshaw Goddard leading the way since 2009. As competition intensifies, independent firms may struggle to maintain their positions in a more international legal landscape.

The co-working industry is experiencing significant growth, with a 15% year-over-year increase in flexible office spaces. While current co-working space accounts for only 2.2% of the office market, projections suggest it could rise to 8-10%. The shift is driven by corporate users seeking dedicated spaces rather than freelancers. Co-working is increasingly being utilized as a repositioning tool for struggling office buildings, particularly B and C class properties. Building owners are exploring partnerships with established operators or developing their own co-working brands, adapting to the evolving needs of employees and the market.

Avanto Announces Webinar to Share the State of AI in Commercial Furniture
Avanto announced an upcoming live webinar on March 4, hosted by Avanto President Matt Danyliw and Chief Innovation Officer Leonardo Vargas. The session will explore the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence in the commercial furniture industry and provide practical, real-world takeaways for manufacturers and dealers.
As part of the event, Avanto will also present the first live demo of Strata, the company’s new platform designed to help commercial furniture organizations turn day-to-day operations into automated, intelligent action.
During the webinar, Danyliw and Vargas will review the current state of AI adoption across the industry, cutting through hype to highlight what’s working now, what’s coming next, and how companies can start seeing results without disrupting their teams or overhauling existing systems. Attendees will also get a guided look at how Strata orchestrates execution across people, workflows, and existing systems without adding another tool.
“AI is no longer a future conversation for commercial furniture,” said Matt Danyliw, President of Avanto. “This webinar is about what’s real, what’s useful, and how manufacturers and dealers can apply AI to streamline operations and unlock new levels of execution.”
“Strata is built to connect the work already happening across teams and systems and turn it into coordinated, automated action,” said Leonardo Vargas, Chief Innovation Officer at Avanto. “This demo is the first chance to see that orchestration in action — live.”
