Vitra x Rimowa—Now Boarding

Well, here’s a collaboration we didn’t see coming—but absolutely should have. Swiss design powerhouse Vitra and German luxury luggage legend Rimowa have teamed up to produce… a toolbox and a rolling stool. Yes, you heard right. Not a suitcase. Not a chair. But something oddly in-between—and kind of wonderful.

The limited-edition drop (early access lands June 18th) blends Vitra’s design heritage with Rimowa’s unmistakable grooved aluminum aesthetic—the same industrial cool that’s made their carry-ons a must-have for CEOs, DJs, and design snobs alike. The stool, decked out in anodized aluminum, recycled interior lining, and a leather latch strap, even features a removable cushion (because, of course it does). And the matching toolbox slides perfectly inside. It’s like if the Eames Aluminum Group chair had a baby with a Lufthansa carry-on.

As everyone knows, these kinds of crossovers are table stakes in the fashion world. Every fashion house from Dior to Crocs is slapping logos on one another like it’s a middle school lunch swap. But in contract furniture? Collaborations are still rare birds. Which begs the question—why aren’t more manufacturers doing this?

Vitra and Rimowa just proved that cross-industry mashups can feel fresh and functional. It’s time for more of these—Moooi x Leica? Flos x Fender? Knoll x Patagonia? The possibilities are as endless as the concourses at Cologne Airport.

And if nothing else, it’s nice to see aluminum doing what it does best—looking sharp and going places. Unfortunately, this will not be on display today at NeoCon / Design Days, as Vitra doesn't do shows anymore. Sad.

Office Conversions and Demolitions Expected To Outpace Deliveries This Year

For the first time since 2000, the U.S. is expected to lose more office space than is being constructed in 2025. A report indicates that over 23 million square feet of office space in major markets will be demolished or converted, while only 13 million square feet of new construction is planned. This trend is attributed to high office vacancy rates, currently at 19%, and a shift towards converting office spaces into residential units. Most of the ongoing conversions are located in central business districts, with a significant portion aimed at multifamily housing. Rising construction costs and market uncertainty are expected to further impact new developments and conversions, although office rents may stabilize as obsolete spaces are removed from the market.

Three New Metrics for the Flexible Workplace Era

The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed workplace dynamics, emphasizing the need for in-person collaboration while highlighting the importance of understanding how employees interact with their workspaces. Traditional metrics like cost per square foot are no longer sufficient; new metrics are needed to assess corporate real estate decisions in a hybrid work environment.

Three key metrics have emerged: 1. Cost per visit: This metric aligns costs with actual utilization, allowing companies to view office space through a consumer-focused lens. 2. Cost of vacancy: This focuses on the financial implications of unused space, analyzing vacant square footage and total occupancy costs. 3. Peak utilization: This assesses how a space is used at its busiest times, helping organizations understand the gap between capacity and typical usage. These metrics provide valuable insights for optimizing real estate portfolios, enhancing efficiency, and improving employee experiences in flexible office settings.

This chair is in good condition with minimal wear, measuring 18.5ʺW × 16.25ʺD × 32.25ʺH.

MMQB Buying Advice
The Harter Corporation Mid 20th Century Industrial Chair

To be fair —finding a genuinely American-made, mid-century industrial chair for under the price of dinner at a trendy airport steakhouse is nearly impossible. But lo and behold, for a mere $225, you can claim this brushed steel and brick-red leather beauty from the glory days of the Harter Corporation, circa August 1962. That’s right, this chair predates the moon landing and probably witnessed more corporate intrigue than an entire season of Mad Men.

Located in the thriving design hub of… Hammond, Louisiana (just north of New Orleans, in case your GPS starts judging you), this chair has a lot going for it: minimalist steel frame, real leather upholstery in a shade that whispers “C-suite confidence,” and the engraved Harter logo to prove it’s not some knockoff churned out of a Brooklyn warehouse by someone named Chad.

The Harter Corporation, for those keeping score at home, was a stalwart of the American office furniture world—back when furniture was built to outlive your career and maybe even your children. They made serious, heavy, unpretentious pieces that didn’t try to look like Scandinavian sculptures or “ergonomically hug” your spine. They just worked.

And this one still does. It’s in good vintage condition, meaning it has just enough patina to feel authentic without triggering a tetanus shot. Measuring 18.5” wide by 16.25” deep by 32.25” high, it fits just about anywhere a chair should go—office, dining room, moody creative loft, or as ironic decor in your minimalist tech dungeon.

Of course, the chair itself is $225. Shipping will cost you more—because we no longer build anything near you—but look at it this way: you could either drive to Hammond, Louisiana and make a weekend of it (gumbo, gas station boudin, maybe catch a minor league baseball game), or pay $400 to watch a logistics company toss it into a truck like it’s a sack of onions.

Either way, this one’s a buy. It’s a rare piece of American design history, built like a tank, and stylish enough to pass as “intentional” to your design-snob friends. And unlike most things from 1962, it won’t try to sell you cigarettes or bourbon. Not directly, anyway.
